Most of the time, if you ask me to name my favorite band, you’ll get an, “umm… well… hmmm……”. For me, it’s usually impossible to name just one artist who rises above the rest of the field. But from time to time I’ll become obsessed with a group or performer, be it for a day, a week or a month, during which time I try to get everyone I know to experience their music. This usually happens after I see a great band live, and this has been the case since Monday night’s Cloud Cult show. It gave me a new appreciation of an already beloved album. Henceforth, whenever I listen to the first track on their album (at that great moment where the bass drum and industrial-strength samples drop out so that the opening cello theme can return), I can picture Sarah closing her eyes and becoming completely absorbed in what she’s playing (photo via Product Shop, article linked below).

Not surprisingly, I am not alone in offering my praises. Gothamist even devoted their latest edition of weekly music picks to Cloud Cult. Product Shop has posted another review with some nice pictures from Monday’s show. (I guess it shouldn’t come as shock that a show sponsored by a popular website has been heavily documented on the interwebs.)

Without the backing of a record label, the band has truly relied on word-of-mouth to bring people to shows. They seem to have a very real and refreshing sense of what they want to achieve through their music. You can tell that they don’t measure their success in album sales, but rather in how many people speak to them, face to face, to tell them how much they enjoy their shows and recordings. Their self-created record label Eartholgy Records is a non-profit organization dedicated to environmentally friendly replication. I just looked up antonyms for “sell-out” and found a picture of Craig Minowa.

Two hours before the show on Monday I realized just how down to earth the band truly is. (Should I apologize for that one)? I had the pleasure of speaking with Sarah (whose husband and one-and-a-half year old travel with the band) and I mentioned a festival I’ll be attending next month. She replied, with hope and excitement in her eyes, “We would just love to play a festival. I think that would be so much fun”. You hear that promoters? Make Sarah and her band happy. (Anyone from the Village Voice reading this?)

Here are a few more tracks from Monday’s show. The first is an unreleased new song that Craig opened the show with. I’ll attempt to balance that with the crowd favorite Washed Your Car. I know it’s a crowd favorite because the man in the recording said so. (I hope he doesn’t mind being included). Advice from the Happy Hippopotamus is one of those albums where any track could be your favorite. Naturally, I can’t pick one.

very well said. and i’m with you, there’s no way i could pick one song as my favorite. although “that man jumped out the window” or “transistor radio” would be really, really close. oh, and “moving to canada.” and “happy hippo” and . . . you get the picture!

I found your site looking for Think Coffee (although I like music too, so…this is cool) and thought the same thing: hoorah, good music! And hoorah, yummy brownie. I think I was more into the brownie. Well. I was hungry.

I haven’t really gotten into Cloud Cult, but maybe I need to listen to some more stuff? (takes mp3s)

You went to see Magnet?! ARHHAR! Damn, I want to know how that went. I tried to go…yup.
